Is the Winter Olympics the greatest sporting event ever?
Every sport is adventurous. You are either sliding across ice on skates or shoes, or you are sliding across or down snow on ski’s or a snowbaord, or sliding down a track at top speed.
On top of this, Lake Placid, Calgary and Salt Lake give public bobsled rides as well luge rides on admission tickets. You can also go speedskating where the Olympics took place on the very same track on a daily basis. WHAT OTHER SPORTING EVENT IS THIS GENEROUS TO THE PUBLIC?
Well you have a really good point; I never thought of it that way before, kudos.

Australia at the Winter Olympics $82.85 Australia first competed in the Winter Olympic Games in 1936 in GarmischPartenkirchen, and has participated in every games since, with the exception of the 1948 Games in St. Moritz. In the early years, Australias athletes did poorly; only two athletes placed in the top half of their events before 1976, while the vast majority placed in the bottom quarter, including some who finished last. This lack of success was attributed to the Australian culture, climate and lack of snow, as well as the lack of support for the athletessports administrators regarded investment in winter sports as futile. After the appointment of Geoff Henkewho had been unable to compete in 1956 after the administrators neglected to endorse his ice hockey teams applicationas team manager in 1976, the results slowly began to improve, and by the 1990s, some Australians were regarded as medal prospects. The upturn in performance was accompanied by increased government funding for winter sports, the creation of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia and the purchase of an alpine training base in Austria. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 106 Publication Date: 2010/04/29 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.25 inches |

Gliding for Gold: The Physics of Winter Sports $71.96 As anyone from cold climates knows, frequently occurring ice and snow lead to a special appreciation of sports such as skiing, sledding, and skating. Prolific physics popularizer Mark Denny’s take on winter athletics lays out the physical principles that govern glaciated game play. After discussing the physical properties of ice and snow and how physics describes sliding friction and aerodynamic drag, Denny applies these concepts to such sports as bobsledding, snowboarding, and curling. He explains why clap skates would only hinder hockey players, how a curling rock curls, the forces that control luge speed, and how steering differs in skiing and snowboarding. With characteristic accuracy and a touch of wit, Denny provides fans, competitors, and coaches with handy, applicable insight into the games they love. His separate section of technical notes offers an original and mathematically rigorous exploration of the key aspects of winter sports physics. A physics-driven exploration of sports played on ice and snow that is truly fun and informative, "Gliding for Gold" is the perfect primer for understanding the science behind cold weather athletics. |
