Simon Khan Wins 2010 BMW Championship on West Course at Wentworth, England
On a sun baked final day on the controversial new West Course saw plenty of action, including a surprise win from the English outsider Simon Khan.
Simon Khan was only invited last Monday to attend the tournament by sponsor BMW, and ranked 471 in the world the 37 year old Englishman from Essex was uncertain about his future in golf, havng been back to the European Tour qualifying school last November.
Khan managed to hold a 20ft putt on the last to post a 6 under par finish, which would set a difficult early target for the rest of the field.
For much of the 4 days, fellow Englishmen Danny Willett, Chris Wood and Luke Donald were at the top of the leaderboard but as they finished their final 9 holes their scoring proved difficult.
The 20 foot birdie putt on the last gave Khan the first prize of €750,000 by one stroke over Ryder Cup star Luke Donald and Swede Fredrik Andersson Hed.
Khan’s stunning five under par 66 for the day and overall 6 under par finish brings him a five-year European Tour exemption and a place in July’s Open Championship at St Andrews and becomes the first player to win the trophy after needing a sponsor’s invitation. Khan turned professional in 1991, and worked as an assistant at a club first before finally getting a European Tour card on his eighth attempt. Last season he had only one top-ten finish.
“This is what I’ve always dreamed of doing,” said Khan, whose career had fallen away since he won the 2004 Celtic Manor Wales Open and then two years later was a distant runner-up in this tournament behind David Howell.
“It’s as much for the family as it is for me – it’s unbelievable to be standing here right now.
“This means everything. This tournament is the reason I started playing golf and just being here is special this year.
“I love The Tour so much. Your dream is even to start to be out here, and then to win, and then you sort of – after I won in Wales, it sort of got a little bit hazy.
